Liskeard Athletic 1-3 Swindon Town Women (FA Cup)

Town take the victory down in Cornwall

22 October 2023

Swindon Town Women got back to winning ways and secured their place into the next round of the FA Cup after a 3-1 victory against Liskeard Athletic on Sunday.

Swindon Town dominated the first 15 minutes with some brilliant passes and high pressing which caused a lot of problems for Liskeard’s backline early on.

However, it would be Liskeard Athletic who opened the first section of the half, with an effort from inside the box that saw Town a goal down with 10 minutes left to play.

Town responded well following the opener minutes later, with lovely build-up play and found Megan Jarvis free inside the box and found the back of the net after a rebound save from Liskeard’s keeper.

The game went quiet for the remainder of the half until Town’s number 26 Billie Haynes saw her first goal of the season with a composed finish after Grace Purnell fell into the box which helped Town take the lead for the first time in the game.

It continued to be Town that pushed thoroughly for another goal and maintained the lead, with a succession of corners and half-chances falling Swindon’s way before the half-time whistle blew.

Straight into the second half the Town girls applied pressure early on, with Helena Diaz-Butcher getting two close chances but both flew inches away from going into the net.

Swindon could’ve extended the lead with just 20 minutes left to play, with Jess Graham finding herself with a shot across that was cleared just off the line by Liskeard’s defender and would find Purnell free but her shot hit the outer net.

Mia Mugford almost buried a third goal for Swindon on the counter and managed to get in front of Liskeard’s defender, but her low shot was found wide past the goal.

It was Town who made the most of the next opportunity with substitute Annie Coston producing a deserved goal, minutes after coming onto the pitch.

Forward Diaz-Butcher made a lovely run down on the right-hand side after beating Liskeard’s left back found Colston unmarked inside the penalty area and drilled the ball straight past goalkeeper Sara Rowe.

A good result for Swindon moves them forward into the first proper round of the FA Cup Women’s and will take this performance back into the league next weekend against Selsey too.
