MK Dons 3-2 Swindon Town

Town fall to a narrow defeat to the Dons on Saturday

28 October 2023

Town ended the last week of October with a frustrating 3-2 away defeat to MK Dons at Stadium MK on Saturday.

MK Dons opened the scoring late in the first half, with forward Max Dean finding the far corner despite Murphy Mahoney's best efforts in the 39th minute.

Swindon found an equaliser through forward Jake Young just two minutes after coming off the bench, but two late goals for the Dons saw them come away with all three points.

Swindon made three changes to the side which was defeated at home for the first time this season on Tuesday against Gillingham, with Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Liam Kinsella and Tom Clayton getting his first start of the season as the three players came in for Jake Young, Dan Kemp and Harrison Minturn.

It was a very even opening to the game, with the best chance coming in the sixth minute for Town, with the returning Rushian Hepburn-Murphy latching onto a looped ball, but only managing to fire his effort into the turf, before the home side cleared their lines.

The game levelled out for the next 20 minutes until Mahoney was called into action when Dean fired at his near post, but the Town keeper was on hand to deny him with a strong block.

Mahoney was there again three minutes later to deny the home side with another shot coming in from range.

However, Swindon responded with their own spell of pressure, with midfielder George McEachran shooting from distance in the 36th minute, but unfortunately saw his effort whistle just over the MK crossbar.

But it was the home side who would score the game's opening goal, as Dean again found space in the Town penalty area, and fired into the far corner despite a reaching Mahoney almost being able to reach it.

Town pushed for an equaliser late in the first half, but unfortunately couldn't quite create the opening to bring that chance before the end of the first 45.

Half-time: MK Dons 1 Swindon 0

It was a positive start to the second half from Swindon, with Hepburn-Murphy almost able to bring Town back on level terms, had it not been for a misfortunate control two minutes in.

MK Dons responded and forced another good save from Mahoney, with Dons skipper Alex Gilbey firing across goal, but Town's Mahoney was on hand in the 51st minute to tip it wide of his goal.

A midway second-half switch began to change Swindon's fortunes with the recently-introduced Jake Young creating space and firing into the far corner, with a well-taken finish in the 58th minute.

But, MK Dons again found themselves ahead in the 67th minute, when defender Warren O'Hora charged forward and found the back of the net with a whipped effort, leaving Town looking to reply.

However, with Swindon looking to push for that late equaliser, the home side found a through an unfortunate own goal by midfielder George McEachran in the 84th minute, ending Town's chance of a response.

But, with six minutes of added time and a 93rd-minute goal from Frazer Blake-Tracy, who climbed highest from a left-sided free-kick, gave Swindon hope but unfortunately, MK Dons saw out the remaining minutes and came away with all three points.

Swindon now looks to respond to a difficult week, hosting National League side Aldershot Town in the FA Cup first round next Saturday at The County Ground.
