Gillingham U18s 0-2 Swindon Town U18s

Town win comfortably at Beechings Cross Training Ground

11 September 2023

Swindon Town U18s were victorious last Saturday after goals from Miles Obodo and Joel McGregor saw Town advance into the third round of the Youth Alliance League Cup.

Town started the game nicely and dominated the first 15 minutes with constant possession-based football and high pressing.

It was McGregor who opened the scoreboard just after 20 minutes, as the ball fell to his feet and poked the ball past the keeper who came off his line.

The action for Town wouldn’t stop there, as midway through the first half, Hubbard took his shot from the edge of the box and saw it go inches past the goal.

However, Gillingham would have their first real opportunity of the half just before the whistle, but Town kept the lead with a strong block by the defence.

Half-time: Gillingham U18s 0 Swindon Town 1

Swindon would pick up where they left off in the second half with dominating possession, to which Town nearly scored their second goal as Fin Adams carried the ball excellently to the halfway line and played it to McGregor who failed to lift it over the Gillingham goalkeeper.

McGregor wouldn’t just be doing his attacking duties but also his defensive after a dangerous corner from Gillingham would find their midfielder on the edge of the box who let off a brilliant shot but was blocked by Swindon’s number 9.

There would be no real action until the 80th minute of the game as Stewart would use his body well against the defender to send a header over the top of the defence to Miles Obodo who controlled his cross to perfection to score after coming off the bench.

This would be the last of the action in the second half and the referee would blow his whistle to confirm Town’s place in the third round of the Youth Alliance League Cup.

Following this positive result, Swindon U18s now look ahead to their next game in the Youth Alliance League against Forest Green Rovers in a couple of weeks' time.

Swindon Town U18s: Evans, Hutt, Chard (Stewart 73’), Gonzalez (Foye 85’), Hart, Adams, Ameen (Gray 75’), Brown, Hubbard (Britchford-Stanley 88), McGregor, Alston (Obodo 73’).

Goals: McGregor 23, Obodo 80
