Portishead Town Ladies 2-3 Swindon Town Women

Town take all three points on the road in their latest league test

25 September 2023

Swindon Town Women continued their impressive start to this season's campaign, with a 3-2 away win that saw them stay in fourth place in the FAWNL Division One South West table.

It was a lively start from Town, with an own goal from Portishead Town just a few minutes in, giving Swindon a well-deserved lead in the game's opening proceedings.

However, it didn’t take long for the home side to get an equaliser just two minutes after giving a goal away and made the game open up, with both sides testing the other’s mettle.

Newly appointed Richard Wood’s side continued to apply pressure, with top goal scorer Annie Colston releasing a shot from outside the box which hit the crossbar midway through the first half and Town’s early pressure eventually told again.

It wasn’t long after this that Swindon found their second goal through the re-introduced Meg Jarvis, notching her first goal of the season, being in the right place at the right time in the

Similarly to previous weeks, Town came out strong in the second half when Helena Diaz-Butcher sent a beautiful cross to Jess Graham her shot going just inches over the goal.

The game came to a stoppage point for Town’s Ellie Strippel due to illness which forced her to go off the pitch.

In typical Annie Colston style, the striker sprinted into the box and found goal number three for Town after a thunder strike shot found the back of the net.

With just 20 minutes left to play, Town’s goalkeeper Emily McGrogan went down due to an injury which forced captain Georgia Clifford to take her place between the sticks for the final parts of the game.

Despite the loss of McGrogan, Town’s defence kept their strength to help out Clifford in goal but could not hold on any longer and saw Portishead Town squeeze another goal just before the full-time whistle, and fortunately kept the score at 3-2 in unfamiliar circumstances.

Town took all three points on the road and the focus is now back to the FA WNL Cup against Rugby Borough next Sunday.
