Town enter the first round proper of the WNL Cup with impressive victory

11 September 2023

Swindon Town Women secured their place into the first round proper of the WNL Cup, following a 4-2 victory at The County Ground against AFC Wimbledon Women.

Town applied early pressure within the first ten minutes of the game which led to a goal opportunity for Billy Haynes, who managed to get her shot across goal but Wimbledon’s keeper matched her effort.

It wasn’t long until Ellie Strippel opened the scoreboard, Diaz-Butcher found Strippel in a lot of space and sprinted down the right-hand side of the box and managed to time her effort perfectly to put Town in the lead.

After a spell of chances for Town, the second goal came just before the 45th minute after Diaz-Butcher found Annie Colston unmarked inside the box who took the ball well and smashed it into the net.

Though, within the space of four minutes, Wimbledon brought back a goal, right before half-time.

Half-time: Swindon Town 2 AFC Wimbledon 1

The beginning of the second half saw Wimbledon with early pressure and they would be back into the game with an equaliser.

Town were fighting for a third where Diaz-Butcher found Strippel in plenty of space but her shot did not find the net.

Not long after, Town found a third goal through Ellie Strippel yet again. Diaz-Butcher would get her third assist of the game as she would play the ball across the goal to Strippel who managed to poke it home to regain the lead.

Colston would also find herself with a brace after yet again another assist from Diaz-Butcher who made a brilliant run down the right-hand side to find Colston who managed to slot it past the keeper without any trouble.

Swindon Town will now reflect and look forward to playing Southampton Women back at The County Ground next Sunday.
