Swindon Town Women 6-2 Southampton Women

Town win comfortably and secure all three points in their latest league game

17 September 2023

Swindon Town Women secured an impressive 6-2 home victory after a goal fest game against Southampton Women FC at The County Ground.

An early goal from striker Annie Colston gave Town a good start before Southampton equalised down the other end just two minutes later.

It was another lively start for Swindon, with top goal scorer Annie Colston making it very easy, she took the ball around the keeper and found the back of the net to secure her 8th goal of the season after just three minutes.

However, it was only two minutes later Town saw themselves through on goal with Southampton who equalised to put the game level five minutes into the first half.

It was a back-and-forth first 10 minutes into the game, where Town doubled their lead when Ellie Strippel took on the Southampton defenders and slotted the ball in the bottom left-hand corner.

Town dominated the first 20 minutes, who forced Southampton’s keeper to make plenty of saves Town showed that with a third goal in the 24th minute when that infamous partnership of Strippel and Colston released a lovely drive along the byline to beat the keeper and gave Colston an easy tap in goal.

Despite all possession from Town, Southampton found themselves with a chance from a corner kick that hits Town’s keeper McGrogan’s knee into the back of the net to get their second goal of the game.

Just minutes before the half time whistle, Strippel made a fantastic run on the left-hand side and unleashed a vicious shot that the keeper saved.

Half time: Swindon 3 Southampton 2

The second half started with another opening goal for Town with brilliant play down the left-hand side from Strippel to Colston whose cross found Helena Diaz-Butcher with another tap-in.

It was only 10 minutes after Strippel fancied a second as well with an effort from range gliding through the sky and over the keeper’s head.

The home side continued with all possession and nearly secured goal number six, where MacDonald was free in the box but Southampton survived with a goal-line clearance.

The reds did not stop until the final whistle and MacDonald finally secured her second goal of the season, where she caught the ball perfectly on the half-volley and flew straight into the bottom left corner to secure a sixth goal.

Following this positive result, Swindon Town Women now look ahead to their next game in the WPL Division One League against Portishead Town next weekend.
