Town look ahead to their penultimate home game of 23/24 this afternoon

13 April 2024

Swindon Town play their penultimate home fixture of the season on Saturday, as they welcome AFC Wimbledon to the County Ground.

Town will be looking for revenge from their earlier meeting, with The Dons coming away as 4-0 victors in December.

Both sides come into the contest following three-point weekends. The Robins will be looking to build on their 2-0 victory away to play-off hopefuls Barrow, whilst Wimbledon will be wanting to kick on from their win over Salford as they target a play-off place.

A lowdown on the visitors

AFC Wimbledon, founded in 2002, is one of the youngest clubs in the EFL but has a successful history dating back over 100 years.

The original Wimbledon Football Club was founded back in 1889 as Wimbledon Old Centrals and did not achieve Football League status until the late 1970s after winning three consecutive Southern League titles. They continued their meteoric rise, and by the 1986/87 campaign, they had reached the top flight and won the FA Cup in 1988. They were part of the inaugural Premier League season in 1992, with their eight-year spell in the EPL including three top-half finishes.

However, after the club was permitted to move to Milton Keynes some 70 miles away, the supporters formed a new, fan-owned club in 2002. Fast-forward to 2011, and after five promotions in just nine years, the club found themselves in the EFL once again. 2021 marked the first time in 30 years that the club were back playing at Plough Lane.

After relegation from League One in the 2021/22 campaign, and a disappointing 21st-placed finish last season in League Two, the club now find itself fighting, along with a number of other teams, for a spot in the play-offs.

The Manager: Johnnie Jackson

Johnnie Jackson was appointed as AFC Wimbledon boss in May 2022, after a short spell as manager of Charlton Athletic.

He had a long and successful playing career spanning nearly 20 years, which included a brief spell at Swindon Town on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in 2002, as well as long stints at the likes of Colchester and Charlton.

Despite a testing first season in charge, Jackson has seen far more success this campaign, which led to him and assistant Terry Skiverton extending their contracts in February until 2026.

One to watch: Omar Bugiel

After star striker Ali Al-Hamadi departed the club to join high-flying Championship outfit Ipswich in the January transfer window, it was a huge relief for the 23 other League Two clubs.

Lebanese international Omar Bugiel will be the one that Town needs to keep at bay on Saturday, with the forward getting himself on the scoresheet in his last outing, bagging his 11th in all competitions.

He also scored in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season.
