Match Preview: Walsall vs Swindon Town

Town visit Walsall in today’s rearranged League Two clash

16 April 2024

Town will be looking to make it three wins in their last four games today as they travel to the Midlands to face Walsall this evening.

Walsall has had a mixed bag of results with disappointing losses to Notts County and Doncaster whilst also picking up two good wins against Tranmere Rovers and Salford City.

Currently sitting in 11th position with 62 points, only five points outside of the playoff places. However, Swindon come into this game with the mental advantage as they won their recent fixture against the Saddlers in a 2-0 win at the start of the season and will be looking to do the double over Walsall with a victory this evening.

A lowdown on the visitors

A club that was formed in 1888, it wasn’t long until they started playing in a competitive league in 1897 when they officially became Walsall Football Club, the team they are known as to this day.

Success followed in the 1960s as they began to rise up the leagues and became more well-known across the footballing community before difficult spells in the years that followed led to improvements needed to be made to see the club rise up the leagues once again, achieving numerous promotions across the 1980s and 90s.

Losing out on Championship automatic promotion in 2016 by a single point, before losing out in the resulting play-off to Barnsley saw the Saddlers relegated in 2019 and end what was an impressive 11-year stay in the third tier of English football, finding themselves where they are today.

Memorable Match

League 2 – 07/05/2022 – Walsall 0-3 Swindon Town

First-half goals from Harry McKirdy and a brace from Jack Payne saw Swindon secure a League Two play-off place with a comfortable win at Walsall.

Swindon began the day in seventh, inside the play-offs by just a single point, and took care of their own destiny in front of 3,590 travelling fans at the Banks's Stadium.

After spending three years in a couple of different coaching roles at Walsall, Sadler was given the interim manager role at the end of last season before finally being announced as manager in May.

One to watch: Mo Faal

Striker Mo Faal joined Walsall on loan from West Bromwich Albion in January 2024. The 20-year-old spent the first half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at fellow League Two side Doncaster Rovers where he scored nine goals in all competitions before opting to move to the Midlands halfway through this campaign, scoring on four occasions in 17 appearances.
