Sutton United 3-1 Swindon Town

Town fall to frustrating away defeat to the U's on Easter Monday

1 April 2024

Swindon Town fell to a disappointing 3-1 away defeat to Sutton United at the VPS Community Stadium on Easter Monday.

Sutton's Charlie Lakin scored the game's opening goal early in the first half before an own goal from Town's Jack Bycroft put the U's two goals ahead.

Harry Smith scored Sutton's third midway through the second half to make the afternoon one to forget for Swindon.

Paul Glatzel scored a late consolation from a free-kick just outside the Sutton penalty area, but it was too late for Swindon as they fell to a frustrating defeat in their Easter Monday fixture.

It was three changes to the side which overcame Notts County on Good Friday, with the latest addition Nnamdi Ofoborh given his first start with skipper Charlie Austin and defender Tom Brewitt also returning to the starting XI.

The game started difficult for Swindon, with Sutton taking the lead within 10 minutes through Charlie Lakin.

After the ball was worked down the home team's right-hand side, the ball was clipped to the far post, looking for Lakin and the Sutton man gave the U's the lead with a close-range header.

There was an initial reaction from Town after following behind early on, as Udoka Godwin-Malife released Zach Elbouzedi down the right-hand side, who then found skipper Charlie Austin in the penalty area but his off-balanced effort was unfortunately off target.

Despite this opportunity, it would be Sutton who would have the better of the next few chances, with efforts from Lakin, Harry Smith and Joe Kizzi fortunately either off target or saved by Town keeper Jack Bycroft.

There weren't to be too many more chances for Swindon in the first half, with the closest opportunity being Aaron Drinan looking to capitalise on a Steve Arnold miskick, but his clipped effort was frustrating over the bar in Town's final effort in the first half.

Half-time: Sutton 1 Swindon 0

Town's second half started in a similarly difficult way to the first, with a low cross misread by Town keeper Jack Bycroft, who unfortunately turned the ball over the line three minutes into the second half.

There weren't too many more threatening chances until Sutton scored their third with 20 minutes left to play through top scorer Harry Smith.

A drilled cross found its way to the back post, where Smith was positioned to poke home his side's third, leaving Swindon looking to respond with an improved final few moments of this contest.

There was a positive moment from this afternoon's fixture, with academy youngster Joel McGregor coming on with around 15 minutes left to play to make his league debut, following an impressive campaign with Town's U18s.

The youngster looked to get his side on the scoresheet this afternoon with an impressive run that forced fellow second-half substitute Omari Patrick to bring him down just outside the Sutton penalty area, but unfortunately, the resulting free-kick was fired into the wall by another Swindon substitute Jake Cain in the 82nd minute.

There was time late on for a fourth goal in five games for Paul Glatzel, who scored from a similar free-kick position midway through the four minutes of stoppage time, but it wasn't enough as Town were unable to make it back-to-back wins over the Easter weekend.
