An important win for Town in the FA Women’s National League

Swindon Town Women cruised to victory in the FA Women’s National League after an 8-1 home victory against Portishead Town Ladies at Foundation Park on Sunday.

It was an own goal from Portishead who opened the scoring for Town and minutes later, a second own goal doubled Town's lead. A third goal came before half-time from Meg Jarvis which extended Swindon’s lead before the break.

Jarvis got her second after the break, followed by a brace from Annie Colston in the second half with late goals from Helena Diaz-Butcher and substitute Georgia Vandries completing Town’s rout on Sunday afternoon.

It would be an instant goal-scoring start for Town as Portishead Town’s defender misplaced a pass inside a dangerous area to the goalkeeper and rolled straight down the middle of the net.

Moments later, it would be another mistake from the opposition side, as Holly Beck-Esson used her pace down the right-hand side and found Jarvis with space and the ball was whipped into the box and came off the defender to extend Town’s lead.

However, Portishead showed their dominance and applied pressure to Town’s defence for a short period and a big defensive block from Captain Georgia Clifford denied a good Portishead attack.

Swindon would then get the chance to extend their lead with Jarvis in inches of space on the right-hand side effortlessly chipping the ball to perfection and ending what was a resounding first 45 from Swindon.

The first piece of action in the second half would come to Portishead as they worked a good bit of play to get a few goal chances but Town’s keeper Emily McGrogan would be sharp throughout each chance that came through.

Soon later Swindon would control the action again and a goal from Colston would extend their lead further after a shot from Jarvis was deflected and fell to the feet of Colston to tap in the fourth goal for Town.

Substitute Vandries got the next goal for Swindon as she smashed the ball and found its way into the back of the net with the keeper who was left rooted to the spot.

Portishead Town Ladies, unfortunately, found a goal back in the 88th minute from the penalty spot and McGrogan could not get her hands quick enough to it.

In the latter stages of the game, both Jarvis and Diaz-butchered scored two very identical goals as they both curled the ball from the edge of the box and into the bottom corners of the net with no problem and secured an 8-1 win in Swindon’s latest league test last weekend.

Swindon Town Women will look forward to their next challenge in the next couple of weeks against Bridgwater United on March 10 as they look to keep their winning streak ongoing.

Swindon Town Women: McGrogan, Viveash (Mugford 68), Randall, Jarvis, MacDonald, Colston, Diaz-Butcher, Strippel (Vandries 74), Beck-Esson (Graham 57), Haynes, Clifford (C).
