AFC Bournemouth Women 3-0 Swindon Town Women

Town lose on the road in their latest away league fixture

15 January 2024

Swindon Town Women fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to AFC Bournemouth Women on Sunday afternoon.

It was a testing start for Town, and they were made to pay for their tough opening to the game with Bournemouth’s Lucy Cooper's goal, who opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes.

After a cagey start, Town had themselves a good chance to level up with some teamwork play from Holly Beck-Esson playing a lovely through ball to find Annie Colston with space inside the box, but the number 9 could not convert.

The next 10 minutes saw Swindon look to cause threats and created their best opportunity midway through the first half, with Megan Jarvis making a good run inside the box to beat her defender but her effort was blocked by Bournemouth’s keeper.

However, it wouldn’t be long until Bournemouth extended their lead through new signing Kenni Thompson, after a well-worked set piece and her shot fired into the back of the net just before the half-time break.

With seconds left of the first half, Swindon were fighting to get a goal back with Jess Graham in the box but unfortunately, there were too many Bournemouth bodies crowding Graham and could not get her shot away.

Half-time: Bournemouth 2 Swindon 0.

Swindon looked the stronger team coming into the last 45, dominating the majority of possession and controlling the game comfortably.

It would be Town with the first chance of the half, with the right-hand side causing tension for Bournemouth as Graham found Beck-Esson sprinting down, but the pass would be overhit and forced the Keeper to come off her line.

However, despite looking for that first goal, it would be Bournemouth who extended their lead just before the full-time whistle with Alisha Buckingham who slotted the ball past Emily McGrogan.

The rest of the game would be primarily Bournemouth and Town would unfortunately not be able to get back into the game as Richard Wood’s side would suffer a defeat.

Following this result, Swindon looks ahead to their next contest against Southampton away for their FAWNL fixture next Sunday.
