Crewe 2-1 Swindon Town

Town suffer disappointing defeat in latest away fixture this afternoon

13 January 2024

Swindon Town fell to a frustrating 2-1 defeat away to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday afternoon.

Elliott Nevitt opened the scoring for Crewe, with Charlie Austin finding an equaliser just after the midway point of the first half.

However, shortly after coming on, Crewe's Courtney Baker-Richardson scored Crewe's second and left Town disappointed with the afternoon's result.

Town made three changes to the side that faced Colchester, with latest additions Jack Bycroft, Paul Glatzel and Dawson Devoy all given the chance from the start.

Swindon was further boosted by the returns of Frazer Blake-Tracy and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, with both starting initially on the bench.

It was a tough start for Town and they were made to pay for their slow start with Crewe's Elliott Nevitt opening the scoring in the 13th minute.

The ball was worked well by Crewe down their right-hand side before Nevitt could get on the end of a driven cross and smash the ball past debutant Jack Bycroft, who could do little about the strike inside the penalty area.

The next 10 minutes saw Swindon look to step up a gear and were able to create their best opportunity midway through the first half, with midfielder Dawson Devoy's effort blocked inside the penalty area, before a whipped corner was unfortunately just in front of skipper Charlie Austin.

However, it wasn't long before Austin found his goal with Town's captain able to smash home similarly to the opener in the 30th minute.

The ball was worked nicely between Tyrese Shade and Udoka Godwin-Malife before the former's cross eventually fell kindly for Austin, who drove the ball home and gave Swindon their equaliser with 15 minutes left of the first half.

This moment ended with both sides looking to find the next goal in the second 45, as Town looked to deliver a more promising second half.

Half-time: Crewe 1 Swindon 1

Saidou Khan tried an ambitious effort straight away in the second half, but his strike fell just over the top of the Crewe crossbar and Town looked to continue in this threatening form.

However, the game began to become a similar cagey affair and after the re-introduction of Rushian Hepburn-Murphy midway through the second half, Swindon added another level of threat to their attacking options.

But, despite looking to find that second goal, it would be Crewe who found the game's next goal with the introduction of their own centre-forward in Courtney Baker-Richardson, who immediately found the net just past the 70th minute, leaving Swindon hoping to fight back late on in the game.

Town's best chance fell to Hepburn-Murphy in the 76th minute when fellow substitute Jake Cain released the speedy forward, but could only see his effort from a wide angle saved at the feet of Tom Booth.

With just over 15 minutes left to play, Swindon dominated possession late on and saw another deflected effort come off the bar again from Liam Kinsella, before Austin's header from the resulting corner was unfortunately wide of the near post.

These late chances ended what was ultimately a disappointing afternoon for Town, as they look to back-to-back home games against Tranmere and Bradford to lift their results going forward and look to get back to winning ways.
