Town are victorious in Southampton in latest FA WNL fixture

29 January 2024

Swindon Town Women got back to winning ways in their latest challenge in the FA WNL as they beat Southampton Women 1-0 at Test Park Sports Ground on Sunday afternoon.

A goal for Georgia Vandries in the 57th minute ensured the victory for Town Women, as they got back to winning ways in the league following their impressive victory against Royal Wootton Bassett Women in the Wiltshire FA Women’s Cup last time out.

It was a quiet but positive start for Town in the early stages of the first half, with a good spell of pressure nearly paying off, as Vandries led an early counter-attack and forced Southampton Women back, but the flag was raised just before she could test the home side keeper.

Again, it would be Swindon with the best chance in less than five minutes, with midfielder Taylor MacDonald trying her luck with a free-kick opportunity, but the effort met the hands of the goalkeeper, as Swindon looked to continue on the front foot in the first half.

The game started to become a well-fought contest for both sides, with Southampton managing to maintain possession and making it difficult for Town to create the next chance.

However, Swindon would have their best chance yet, as both Meg Jarvis and Vandries worked well together to move the ball towards the Southampton penalty area, Jarvis took her shot from the edge of the box and effortlessly hit the back of the net but unfortunately, the linesman raised his flag without hesitation as Town continued to push.

Chances came through to Swindon comfortably following this chance, as just before the half-time whistle, it would be Jarvis again who produced a magically solo run, but Southampton’s keeper was very alert and managed to stop the midfielder from going any further as the half-time whistle blew shortly after.

The game continued to be closely fought, but it would be Swindon who came out firing in the second half, with Vandries finally opening the scoring after latching onto an initial save and giving Swindon the advantage in the game.

During the latter stages of the last 45, the game fell quiet with not much going forward however Swindon were the stronger side to keep any chances away from the Sirens.

Swindon Town held firm for the remaining period of the game and after achieving their first league victory of 2024, Swindon will take a lot of positives and confidence going forward into next weekend’s away trip to Selsey Women on Sunday.
