Swindon Town Women 6-0 Royal Wootton Bassett (Wiltshire FA Women’s Cup)

Town Women comfortably progress into the semi-finals

22 January 2024

Swindon Town Women cruised to the semi-finals of the Wiltshire FA Women’s Cup, following a 6-0 victory against Royal Wootton Bassett Town Women at Greens Lane Playing Fields on Sunday.

A brace each for Meg Jarvis and Georgia Vandries, coupled with a Billie Haynes free-kick and a Holly Randall effort just before half-time gave Town Women a comfortable cup victory.

Straight from kick-off, Swindon were in the ascendancy as there were many well-worked chances throughout the first 10 minutes of the game, dominating all possession across this period.

Just before the 15-minute mark, an initial shot from Georgia Vandries ricocheted, with the effort only reaching as far as the composed Jarvis who found the back of the net with a well-taken finish to give Swindon the lead in the first half.

Momentum didn’t slow down for Swindon, though, as they looked to get a second not long after, through a magnificent long-range effort from Vandries, who managed to cut across her defender, but her curling shot was a little too much and curled just inches away the post.

Weather conditions became unbearable in Wiltshire, however, this did not stop Jarvis from shining through to get the second goal of the game in the 30th minute.

The ball dropped kindly for the threatening forward, as Jarvis was left unmarked inside the penalty box and did not hesitate to strike for her second of the game.

Four minutes later Town had a third, with Billie Haynes who managed to get herself onto the scoresheet with a perfect free-kick that swerved into the back of the net, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Swindon wasn't finished yet in that first half as there was still time to get their fourth, with defender Holly Randall finding the finish from a corner kick. After initially cleared from RWB's Millie Powell, Randall reacted quickest and poked home to give Town their fourth and a comfortable lead going into the midway interval.

Half-time: Swindon Town Women 4 Royal Wootton Bassett Town Women 0

The second 45 would start similarly to the first as Swindon carried all the momentum for a while, causing threats and real chances throughout the early stages of the second half.

Defensively, Town was tested a lot more in this half, as Royal Wootton Bassett Women fought to get a goal in their favour, but goalkeeper Shawna Hannam produced several strong saves to keep a clean sheet.

With just under ten minutes left to play, Georgia Vandries found herself able to get on the scoresheet twice with two impressive strikes and round off a comprehensive victory for Town as they now look to their semi-final opponents soon.

Following this positive result, Swindon Town Women will now shift focus to their next challenge in the FAWNL as they are set to face Southampton Women away next Sunday.
