18-year-old defender agrees first professional deal

Swindon Town Football Club are delighted to announce that Joel McGregor has signed his first professional contract with the Club.

After an impressive campaign with the Academy this season, the 18-year-old defender was part of the side that went eight games unbeaten in the Youth Alliance League, while playing a pivotal role in the side's run to the quarter-final in the FA Youth Cup.

Initially joining Swindon Town's Academy in 2018, Joel McGregor would progress through the ranks at Swindon from Under-12s up until Under-18s where he featured for the side over 30 times in all competitions last season, where he ranked up ten goals for the season including a hattrick against Portsmouth and five assists for the Reds.

His performances didn't go unnoticed after he featured a number of times on the bench for the first-team before eventually making his first-team league debut against Sutton United in April.

The defender went on to finish the season strongly with three starts and two appearances off the bench for the senior side to add to his earlier appearance for the side in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy fixture in 2023.

Upon signing his first professional contract, Joel McGregor said: "It's a dream come true to be able to call myself a professional footballer and honestly I couldn't be happier."

"It's been an incredible season with my teammates, from our progression into the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup, to our unbeaten run in the league and my league debut against Sutton, start against Walsall, and home debut against Morecambe."

"I can't wait for next season and ultimately to get back out playing football in front of the fans and I want to say a massive thank you to everybody who has supported me on the journey so far."

Academy Manager, Alex Pike said: "Everyone in the Academy is extremely proud of Joel, from staff that work closely with him daily through to staff that have guided Joel in many other capacities across his journey with us."

His hard work and dedication to improving himself and learning makes him a role model to all boys within the academy from the youngest age groups through to the current scholars, which is an important part of our pathway, role modelling within. Congratulations Joel."

Lead Professional Development Phase Coach, Sean Wood added: "Joel has worked so hard this season and has fully deserved this opportunity to continue his journey at Swindon Town Football Club."

"He started his journey with us at Under-12s and continues his journey within our first team and it's great to see another player who has progressed through our academy into playing for our first team."

"In particular Joel's performances in the FA Youth Cup were at a very high level against some top young international wingers. He has shown he can cope, adapt, and thrive in 1v1 within games and now within the first team."

"A few changes to his game this season have really helped him show his qualities in front of our fans and long may that continue."

Head of Football, Jamie Russell concluded: "It has been a privilege to observe Joel's development both on and off the pitch over the past three years."

"The dedication and effort demonstrated by Joel, as well as our staff, have not gone unnoticed. Witnessing Joel make his starting league debut against Walsall was a moment of immense pride for the entire staff, Joel himself, and his family."
