Town's youngsters draw in latest Merit League One game

23 March 2024

Swindon Town U18s drew 1-1 in their latest Merit League One fixture at home against Sutton United U18s on Saturday morning.

Midfielder Dani Gonzalez opened the scoring towards the end of the first half with a well-taken finish, giving Town the lead going into the half-time break.

However, Sutton was able to find the equaliser just under 10 minutes into the second half, leaving both sides to settle for a point despite Swindon pushing for a late winner in the final 30 minutes to get back to winning ways.

Sean Wood made six changes to the side which fell to defeat against AFC Wimbledon, with a number of Town's younger players introduced and given the chance to impress with several U18s currently out on work experience loans within different levels of men's first-team football.

It was an even first 30 minutes in the first half, with both sides looking to take the initiative and as a result, the advantage in this Merit League One fixture and it was Swindon that would do just that in the 35th minute through midfielder Dani Gonzalez.

The deadline was finally broken late on in the first half and it was through Gonzalez showing quick feet on the left-hand side of the Sutton penalty area, before striking a powerful effort that flew past the helpless Sutton keeper and gave Town the lead with a well-taken finish.

This was to be the game's final chance of the opening 45, leaving Swindon hoping to build on that narrow lead in the second half.

Half-time: Swindon Town U18s 1 Sutton United U18s 0

After a promising first half, Town, unfortunately, saw the away side equalise and made things all square for the majority of the second 45.

Both sides looked to push and probe to find the game's next goal and despite both pushing for a winning effort, opportunities were difficult to come by to find that second goal.

Swindon brought on changes in the second half to help with their push for a second-half winner in the game but with the options of players brought on in a variety of positions to look to freshen things up in the final moments of the game.

But it wasn't to be and left Swindon to settle for a point against the U's, and with plenty of important matchday minutes in a number of U18s players too.

Town's U18s will now look to go one step further and get back to winning ways next time out in their next game in the Merit League One, with a trip down to the south coast to face previous Youth Alliance League rivals Portsmouth next Saturday.
