Swindon Town 1-2 Doncaster Rovers

Despite an improved second half performance, Town fall to defeat

16 March 2024

Despite an improved second half, Swindon Town were unable to respond to Tuesday night's result with a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

Maxime Biamou opened the scoring with a well-struck volley before Hakeeb Adelakun made it two with a low effort into the bottom corner.

Swindon started the second half well with a Paul Glatzel header shortly after the second half began, but couldn't find a second despite a better second 45 showing to give them anything from this afternoon's action.

Aaron Drinan looked to pounce on an opportunity in the ninth minute but saw the ball scrambled into the grateful arms of Thimothee Lo-Tutala as Town looked to start well.

However, things were made difficult when just a minute later, Doncaster put themselves in front and it was through recent addition Maxime Biamou that put his new side ahead just a minute after the Drinan chance.

Doncaster's George Broadbent set the forward through and with a snapshot volley catching out Town's captain this afternoon Jack Bycroft, Swindon found themselves looking to respond to falling behind 10 minutes in.

Shortly after this, a touching moment as an emotional round of applause echoed around The County Ground in memory of Ann Alder and Colin Nunn, with Swindon following this with another nearly moment to get themselves back on level terms.

In the 17th minute, Udoka Godwin-Malife whipped in a dangerous cross which Aaron Drinan did well with to connect to, but could unfortunately see the resulting poked effort go over the Doncaster crossbar.

Another chance came four minutes later, with the same pairing combining again before Drinan saw a low effort held by Lo-Tutala with Swindon beginning to improve.

However, things were made even more difficult when the away side got their second in the 26th minute, with Hakeeb Adelakun continuing his recent good form for Rovers since joining them on loan from League One side Lincoln City.

Despite a promising spell of Swindon pressure, Doncaster's Harrison Biggins set Adelakun on his way and the forward found space to drill a low effort into the bottom right corner, leaving Town with it all to do for the remainder of the game.

There weren't to be many more opportunities for Swindon in the first half, as they looked to get in at half-time and readdress what needs to be improved to come out stronger in the second 45.

Half-time: Swindon 0 Doncaster 2

Following a couple of half-time changes, Town started the second half brightly and found themselves able to halve the deficit when Paul Glatzel scored his third Swindon goal in the 47th minute.

Following a whipped Dawson Devoy cross from the right-hand side, the forward found room to leap highest in the Doncaster penalty area, and flick a clever header into the top right corner to bring his side right back into the game in the second half.

Town began to improve and will feel frustrated not to have made the most of the opportunity in the 56th minute, with a goalmouth scramble seeing Glatzel looking for his second, but was just about cleared away from the away side as Swindon looked to push on.

64 minutes gone and another golden chance for Swindon to get back on level terms, as half-time substitute Rushian Hepburn-Murphy looked to glance a header goalwards similar to Glatzel's earlier finish, but an acrobatic save from Lo-Tutala stopped the forward from making the desired impact off the bench and bring Swindon level.

With just under 10 minutes, Swindon continued to press and another good stop from Doncaster's keeper stopped them from getting back on level terms before the influential Glatzel saw a header whistle just over the away side's crossbar late on.

Unfortunately, this was to be Swindon's last opportunity to find that second goal, and after an improved second-half showing, they will be looking to their two-week break until they return to league action against Notts County, to find the rhythm they have shown at times this season to get back to winning ways and end the campaign positively.
