Town Women complete strong victory in midweek league fixture

23 March 2024

Swindon Town Women got back to winning ways with a comprehensive 5-0 home victory against Keynsham Town Ladies at Oakfield Stadium on Thursday evening.

Meg Jarvis and Ellie Strippel gave Swindon the two-goal lead going into the break, with goals coming either side of the 30-minute mark.

Town continued to push in the second half and found three more finishes through Strippel's second and an Annie Colston double completing the comprehensive victory for Swindon in their latest FAWNL fixture.

Richard Wood made one change from the side which fell to an unfortunate defeat to Maidenhead United last time out, with Sky Hull brought back in place of Jess Graham.

New signing Katie Sherwood also made her first Town matchday squad, with a place on the bench following her move from Oxford United earlier this week.

It was a bright start for Swindon in the opening 20 minutes, with Helena Diaz-Butcher crossing for Meg Jarvis who was inches away from putting Town in front five minutes in.

Just before the 20-minute mark, Swindon almost took the lead following a dangerous corner routine that narrowly missed attacking Swindon heads, before Jarvis found the game's opener midway through the first half.

A run down the right from Annie Colston allowed the forward to shoot before seeing the rebound off the Keynsham keeper fall kindly into the path of Jarvis, who was able to poke home and give Town the lead after an impressive opening 23 minutes in.

Eight minutes later and Town were two in front, with Ellie Strippel finding herself on the scoresheet with another well-taken finish after clever wing play from Diaz-Butcher.

The winger cut down the right-hand side before laying the ball back for the onrushing Strippel, who showed the composure to take a touch and cooly slot the ball away to score Swindon's second just after the 30-minute mark.

There was still time in the first half for one more chance for Swindon with Annie Colston firing a shot goalwards that was unfortunately saved by the away side's keeper, but gave Town plenty of encouragement to kick on and extend their lead in the second 45.

After a chance for Strippel to score her second in the 55th minute, it wasn't long after that top scorer Annie Colston got herself in on the scoring act, with her first of the game in the 59th minute.

A brilliant solo run allowed the forward to find the room on the edge of the Keynsham Town penalty area and find the back of the net with an excellent finish to make it three for Town.

Following this, Katie Sherwood was on for just over 20 minutes to make her Swindon Town debut, with Jess Graham entering the game shortly a minute later.

It was four for Swindon in the 73rd minute, with Colston scoring her second of the game with another persistent run allowing the forward to drive through the away side's defence slot home inside the penalty area and give Town an extended lead.

With just 10 minutes left to play, Strippel scored her second and Town's fifth with another impressive individual goal that saw her pick the ball up towards the halfway line before driving forward and finishing expertly to complete TOwn's scoring for the evening.

A late chance fell the ay of second-half substitute Jess Graham, which was unfortunately saved by Keynsham's keeper as Swindon now looks to build on this mid-week performance with a return to The County Ground for their game against Selsey on Sunday.
