Swindon Town bolster defence with addition of former Oxford defender

21 March 2024

Swindon Town Women are pleased to announce the signing of defender Katie Sherwood from Oxford United.

The 19-year-old defender, who previously played for Oxford United from Under-14s, has been a key player in their National Cup-winning development team.

Sherwood does have some first-team experience, making nine appearances for the Tier Three side this campaign and Katie is a composed defender with good technical ability and an eye for a pass.

First-Team Manager, Richard Wood said: "Oxford United have some excellent young players that they have developed through their successful pathway. Katie is one of them and at 19-years-old is keen to kick on and get more regular senior first-team experience."

"She is an intelligent and composed player and one that it is a good fit for both of us. It will give us the competition for places that we need in defence and also give Katie the opportunity to continue to develop."

"Katie could have easily stayed till the end of the season at Oxford and had another Cup final experience with the development team but has decided to join us and push herself. I am really pleased she has chosen us."

Katie Sherwood said upon signing for Town: "It feels really exciting and it’s a great opportunity to develop and grow more as a player."

"I really like the set up as a club and it’s a good environment to be in. I feel like it’s time to take my next step from Oxford to progress as a player and gain greater experience in a different league."

"The conversations have been good with Richard, I feel he wants to take the club in the right direction and I like his positive coaching style. He’s made me feel very welcome at the club as well as comfortable coming into a new environment."

"I always strive to be the best version of myself. As I am coming into a new team towards the end of a season, I just want to continue to develop as a player and adapt the different challenges I might face."
