BIG MATCH PREVIEW: Swindon Town V Newport County

Get In The Mood For Today's Game With Our Extensive Guide

25 November 2017

Swindon Town are back in Sky Bet League Two action today when they host Newport County at The Energy Check County Ground (3pm Kick-Off).

Dave Flitcroft's side will be looking for a return to winning ways after losing 3-2 to Grimsby in midweek, while The Exiles were also on the losing side on Tuesday after going down 2-1 to Barnet.

LAST TIME WE MET:

Anton Rodgers was on target in a 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade back in September 2015, with Town going on to prevail 7-6 on penalties in a JPT First Round Tie.

TICKET NEWS:

Home fans will only be able to buy tickets in the club shop up until 1pm today, although you will be able to purchase tickets from the ticket windows right up until kick-off.

However, there will be NO sales on the day to Newport fans.

ONE TO WATCH:

Frank Nouble has been in fine form for County so far this term, having helped himself to seven goals. The former Town loanee has plenty of pace and power and he'll no doubt be hoping to fire Newport to all three points today.

TOP SCORERS:

SWINDON TOWN - Luke Norris (9)

NEWPORT COUNTY - Frank Nouble/Shawn McCoulsky (7)

TEAM NEWS:

SWINDON TOWN will be without a number of players today having been hit by a spate of injuries in recent weeks.

Lawrence Vigouroux, Chris Hussey (groin), Amine Linganzi (hamstring), Timi Elsnik (muscle) and Luke Norris (ankle) are all set to miss out later, while Paul Mullin remains a doubt.

In light of that, both James Brophy and Tom Smith have been recalled from their respective loan spells and will be involved in some capacity today.

NEWPORT COUNTY will have to make do without Robbie Willmott due to concussion, while Boss Michael Flynn is expected to make other changes following the defeat to Barnet in midweek.

Captain Joss Labadie (hamstring) and Mark O'Brien (foot) are both set to return to action this afternoon.

A WORD FROM BOTH CAMPS:

Dave Flitcroft, Swindon Town Manager: "Michael Flynn has gone in there and it has just looked so easy for him.

"He looks like he enjoys what he does and that will show to the players. They've had brilliant results and that momentum has certainly carried them forward this season.

"They have become a Play-Off contender, possibly more, and that is what momentum can do for you.

"He's done a fantastic job and his team certainly reflect his passion for football."

Michael Flynn, Newport County Manager: "I've got expectations. I want us to do well and I want us to win every game.

"Trust me, there was nobody more disappointed and upset than myself on Tuesday night.

"I wasn't happy and we've got to bounce back and get back on the winning trail because we're still right in touch with the Play-Off places."

MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 0-1 Newport County

Reds Suffer Narrow Home Defeat

25 November 2017

Swindon Town suffered their second straight defeat in the Sky Bet League Two this afternoon after going down to a 1-0 defeat to Newport County at The Energy Check County Ground.

Nothing could separate the two sides in a tame first-half and Ben Tozer's second-half header proved to be the winner for the visitors.

Dave Flitcroft elected to make two changes with Paul Mullin and Ellis Iandolo replacing Kellan Gordon and Kaiyne Woolery in the Starting XI, with both dropping to the bench.

Town, who lined-up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, were looking to get back to winning ways following their defeat to Grimsby in midweek.

And they made a positive start with Mullin's cut-back finding Keshi Anderson inside the opening three minutes, although the striker was unable to keep his effort down.

Newport, who were also looking to get back on track after losing on Tuesday, then began to enjoy a spell of pressure themselves as Joss Labadie thumped a half-volley over the bar following good work from Frank Nouble.

It was all one-way traffic for a chunk of the first-half as the visitors dominated possession, and they went close on a couple of occasions too.

Ben White produced a superb ball to pick out Nouble inside the area but he could only flick an effort over, before the striker was unable to latch onto Dan Butler's low, driven cross across goal.

Town enjoyed a brief respite as Mullin found himself in space after being picked out by Anderson, but his effort flew way over the bar.

Mullin was then off-target with another shot before Matty Taylor tried his luck from distance, although his strike was easy enough for Joe Day to deal with in the Newport goal.

There was an eventful start to the second-half with Anderson striking over before Nouble and Labadie both saw efforts blocked inside the area at the other end.

Olly Lancashire then saw his header claimed by Day before Labadie had his shot from distance deflected wide.

Both teams were trying to muster up a winner despite chances being hard to come by, although the finishing was poor at both ends with Anderson flicking wide from a Smith cross.

The opening goal did eventually arrive with less than twenty-minutes to play, but it went the way of the hosts with Ben Tozer heading home emphatically from a corner.

That prompted Town to make two changes in quick succession in order to try and get back into the game with Kaiyne Woolery and Kellan Gordon replacing Goddard and Iandolo respectively.

But it was Newport who nearly grabbed a second goal as Shawn McCoulsky thumped an effort inches wide of the post.

Town then made their third and final change with James Brophy replacing Mullin, and it was all the hosts in the closing stages.

Woolery saw his shot deflected behind before Matt Preston rattled the bar at the death, and that proved to be it with Newport holding on to clinch all three points.
