Obika Hoping To Be Involved On Derby Day

6 September 2016

Town striker Jon Obika is hoping to play some part against Oxford United this weekend after coming through his latest test unscathed.

Having been consigned to the sidelines since the opening day of the season with a groin injury, the 25-year-old stepped up his recovery last night after getting just over 60 minutes under his belt during the Robins’ 3-0 friendly win against Royal Wootton Bassett Town FC.

And it was an emphatic comeback from Obika who capped off what was a hugely encouraging display with a well-taken goal in the first-half.

But the attacker’s focus is now on earning a place in the matchday squad for Saturday’s Derby Day showdown away at Oxford.

“It was a groin injury but I’m just glad that it is sorted now,” he told swindontownfc.co.uk.

“I felt it in the Coventry game but I wanted to continue, and then on the rest day it flared up and I couldn’t walk properly then.

“I was annoyed for the first couple of days but because I’ve been through these obstacles before I knew how to get through it.

“You just have to rest, recover and then hit the gym hard.

“I came out of here (the Bassett friendly) unscathed so I’ll be looking to be involved on Saturday.

“The atmosphere against Bristol was something that a player wants to play in, so the boys are already talking about the Oxford game.

“We’re looking forward to it.”

Obika was also pleased to hit the back of the net on Monday night, and is hoping more goals will follow against Oxford United on Saturday.

“It is always good to put a goal away,” he added.

“Sometimes I do get more than one but hopefully they are saved for Saturday.

“We enjoyed the occasion (on Monday), it was good to have Wootton Bassett play their part and it was good for some of the boys like myself and Rapha (Raphael Rossi-Branco), who haven’t played in a while, to get some minutes and come out fresh.”
