REACTION: Williams - We Buckled Under Pressure

29 October 2016

Town Head Coach Luke Williams gave his reaction to the local press in the wake of his side’s 4-1 defeat to Scunthorpe United earlier today…

“We started the game fine and probably the first good chance is us, but then we don’t mark properly in the box from a corner and it is too easy,” he said.

“The fear creeps in and then we look second to everything, we looked confused, we looked too worried to make a decision and a walk into the box makes it 2-0.

“The fear then gets worse and we can’t make a pass, we can’t make a decision, we can’t concentrate, we lose focus and we hesitate and it is 4-0 at half-time.

“The biggest thing in football is the mental side of it and it is the hardest thing to see from the side because everything we see with our eyes is physical, but the mental side of it is more important.

“The group buckled under pressure, confidence is not there and it showed.

“I said at half-time that the game is done, you’ve lost the game so now play, stop thinking about the consequences, stop worrying, try to play football like you played football when you first ever touched a ball and to compete like men.

“To some extent we looked better in the second-half.”

However, Williams was pleased to welcome Michael Doughty and Lloyd Jones back into the fold today.

“We can see with Michael Doughty and Lloyd Jones on the pitch that we are significantly stronger because they are two players that are capable and two players that are confident and want to be on the pitch.

“Trying to get players fit and back into the team and, possibly because they’ve been away from the team for a while, they’ve got a different mental attitude towards it and we need them to step up and give this group a lift.”
