REACTION: Williams - We Left Ourselves With Too Much To Do

17 September 2016

Town Head Coach Luke Williams refused to pull any punches when assessing his team’s performance in their 2-1 defeat to Bury at The County Ground this afternoon…

On The Defeat And Performance:

“We got exactly what we deserved. We didn’t batter them in any way. They were in front and they sat and protected their lead and we did very little about it.

“If you start a game of football in a coma then don’t be surprised if you come out of the coma and you are losing.

“We started slow, there was no tempo to our passing, the reaction was very slow with a turnover in possession and we played straight passes that left players vulnerable to be tackled very easily.

“Goals change games so by the time the two goals are against us, it is too late.

“It is dopey to come in as a midfield player, a very talented player as well, to come in very dopey, not look around over your shoulder and to play a soft pass so casual and it is unfortunate.

“But I’ll accept the mistake. It is the performance that led to the mistake because bit by bit we were getting slower and slower and bit by bit we were getting dopier on the ball.

“There was some level of response in the second-half but to really respond we need to make the game at least level.”

On Jon Obika’s Disallowed Goal:

“The referee explained to us that the referee believed Sean Murray’s shot went directly in and, therefore, there was no need to flag for offside.

“The referee then decided that Jon Obika was in an offside position when he touched the ball and, of course, he was not – he was very comfortably onside.

“The decision is difficult for the referee, I respect them and I appreciate the job they do but we conceded a free-kick that was converted into a penalty last week, which was difficult to accept.

“This week Jon Obika scores from comfortably an onside position and the goal is disallowed sometime after the event when we’ve celebrated and are getting ready to re-start the game.

“It is extremely difficult to accept because goals do change games and maybe it would have been the wake-up call we needed and we could have gone on to compete and win the game, not just try to salvage something.

“But, of course, it is difficult and they have to make these big decisions. It is hard to accept but it is part of football and we shouldn’t say too much about these bad decisions and just try to move on.”

On Jamie Sendles-White’s Injury:

“Initially it looks like it could be a ligament problem, which would be significant enough to keep Jamie out of the squad for a number of weeks.”
