LW: The confidence is going up

22 April 2016

LUKE Williams believes that his side’s performance at Walsall in midweek will give the players confidence going into Saturday’s meeting with Chesterfield at the County Ground.

Speaking before the game, Town’s Head Coach added that his team must concentrate on their own display against the Spireites despite the visitors’ recent form.

“I think the players have been able to pick themselves up each week even when we’ve not been winning,” he said. “They’ve gone into every game as positive as you could expect, really but I think having key players back gave them that extra boost and it was a very good performance (at Walsall).

“The point has edged us closer to mathematical safety and the performance is one that makes the players want to get back out on the pitch and play because the confidence is going up. They can see if they perform in this manner, they give themselves a chance to go and comfortably win a game which is something they’ve missed for a few weeks now.

“They (Chesterfield) are probably in a similar situation to ourselves - in the rebuilding process and what you often get with that is inconsistency so anything could happen tomorrow with their performance but we need to concentrate on our own.

“The one thing we should provide is a good performance – a positive, aggressive performance. One that’s got plenty of goalmouth opportunity for us. I think there’s every chance if we get that right, we get all the points.”

Finally, Williams hoped that Town’s supporters would leave SN1 with an air of optimism for the future come 5pm tomorrow.

“We want at least the fans to go away optimistic that plenty of work has gone into this group,” he explained. “Plenty of players have had their very first taste of league football and that’s something really special. Their career has started here at Swindon Town and the fans have supported them through that. I hope they go away feeling like they’re going to see more from some of these players that have learnt a lot and been on a huge journey this year.

"That would be something that would make us happy - the staff and the players - that the fans will go away feeling that we have given everything. We may not have always been fabulous but they can go away optimistic.”
