Town Women comfortably progress to second round of the FA Cup

13 November 2023

Swindon Town Women cruised to the second round of the Women's FA Cup, following a 6-0 home victory over Sherborne Town at Foundation Park on Sunday.

A brace each for Holly Beck-Esson and Meg Jarvis, coupled with Annie Colston's 49th Swindon Town goal and an own goal just before half-time, gave Town Women a comfortable cup victory.

There was one change from the league draw against Moneyfields last time out, with defender Gipsy Viveash returning to the right-hand side of defence, as Sophie Greenslade and Elise Haines also returned to the matchday squad.

Straight from kick-off, Swindon were in the ascendancy as a well-worked chance from Meg Jarvis saw the effort ricochet off the bar and be put just wide in the follow-up two minutes in.

Eight minutes later, and another two opportunities fell Town's way, but neither Holly Randall nor Annie Colston were able to make the most of the chance, as Swindon continued to push for the opener.

On the 15-minute mark, Colston again tested the Sherborne keeper, with her goalward header forcing a good save, as Town finally made their pressure pay midway through the first half, with Meg Jarvis scoring her first of the game.

A loose ball was played in behind, leaving Jarvis to use her pace and beat the goalkeeper to the ball and place it in the bottom right corner, with a sharp move opening the scoring.

Four minutes later, Town made it two through Holly Beck-Esson in the 23rd minute.

Annie Colston initially fired a shot inside the six-yard box, with the effort only reaching as far as Beck-Esson who was composed enough to find the back of the net and give Swindon their second of the game.

There was still time in the first half to see Swindon get their third, with this one falling courtesy of an own goal 10 minutes before the break.

Grace Purnell used her body well to hold the ball up and provide a dangerous cross, which could only see the Sherborne defender turn the ball into her own net and give Swindon a comfortable and deserved lead going into half-time.

It took Town 61 minutes to create their next best chance, with the returning Viveash marauding forward down the right-hand side and teeing up Jarvis who despite causing a collision between two Sherborne defenders, could only see her effort saved just past the hour.

However, four minutes later, notorious goal-scorer Annie Colston got her 49th goal in a Swindon Town shirt, as winger Helena Diaz-Butcher teed up the forward and she made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

Seconds later, it was five for Swindon as Beck-Esson got her second of the game through pure persistence.

The ball was loose in a dangerous position, and the midfielder threw herself at the ball before delivering the composure to control the bouncing ball and fire a volley into the bottom left corner.

With one of the last chances of the game, Jarvis also found her second of the game and Swindon's sixth with the forward driving forwards and reaching the ball before both a Sherborne defender and then the away team's goalkeeper poked the ball home to round off what was a commanding performance from Swindon Town Women.

Following this performance, Swindon now looks ahead to their next-round opponents which will be announced later Monday afternoon, before looking ahead to their next league test against Torquay in a few weeks.
