PREVIEW: OLDHAM ATHLETIC

26 September 2018

Town head into Saturday’s clash with Oldham looking for back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.

Phil Brown’s boys will go into the game on a high having seen off Yeovil in style last weekend, romping to a 3-0 win with goals from Steven Alzate, Matt Taylor and Elijah Adebayo. Olufela Olomola missed a penalty for the Glovers on a wet and windy day in Somerset.

Town have won two, drawn one and lost one at home but haven’t won at SN1 since August 19th against Tranmere (a Checkatrade Trophy victory against Newport County aside) so will be keen to perform in front of their home support after impressive away displays.

Steven Alzate now sits joint second in the assist charts behind Oldham’s Dan Gardner, with Michael Doughty now two goals off top scorer in the league, James Norwood, and a single strike behind Oldham’s Sam Surridge.

The Oppo

Oldham sit level on points with Swindon but have been performing well away from home – in fact, all but one of their four wins so far this season have come on the road.

One of Oldham’s star players so far has been loanee Sam Surridge who has scored six goals so far this season, four of which have come in their last two games.

At the top of the assist charts is Dan Gardner who has set up four goals so far this season – he has also contributed with two goals in League Two.

Head-to-head

This is the first ever meeting between Oldham and Swindon in the fourth tier and Town will be hoping that it will mean a change in fortunes against the Latics, as the Robins have taken just three points away from their last six home league matches against Saturday’s.

Their general record against the Greater Manchester outfit is not the best – Town have picked up one win in their last six meetings with Oldham.

Our last win over Oldham came in September 2016, when Jon Obika and Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill sealed a 2-0 win at Boundary Park.

The Gaffer

Frankie Bunn joined Oldham Athletic in June and has enjoyed a positive start to life back at Boundary Park.

The former Latics’ striker made 88 appearances and scored 35 goals for the club between 1987 and 1990 before his career was cut short through injury.

Following his playing career, Bunn held a number of coaching roles at clubs such as Wigan Athletic, Coventry City, Manchester City, Rochdale and most recently Huddersfield Town.

At Coventry City he was appointed caretaker manager before returning to his first-team coach role at the club under Chris Coleman.

Throughout his time in coaching he has worked to develop young players and bring through the next generation of talent at clubs such as Manchester City where he held the role of reserve manager and Huddersfield Town where he was a professional development coach working closely with their academy and under 18s.

REPORT: TOWN 0-0 OLDHAM ATHLETIC

29 September 2018

Swindon were frustrated by an organised Oldham side, as they drew 0-0 to make it four clean sheets in five games.

Matt Taylor was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity in stoppage time, as Gevaro Nepomuceno advanced on the Town goal.

A mass brawl ensued with Sid Nelson receiving a booking for his part in the melee.

Going into the game, the two clubs were level on points in the League Two table and that evenness prevailed with Oldham stopping Town from developing any sort of rhythm.

It was a bright start from the Town – Elijah Adebayo worked a one-two with Marc Richards on the edge of the box but couldn’t connect well enough with his shot to trouble Daniel Iversen in the Oldham goal.

Steven Alzate was working the ball forward well and nearly found the perfect cross – but Adebayo nor Richards could extend far enough to poke it home.

As the game went on, Oldham’s plan became more prevalent as they frustrated Town – it took until half an hour in for the next home chance. James Dunne won the ball back on the halfway line and set Adebayo free, but, again, his shot wasn’t on target. Keshi Anderson stopped the ball before in went out but couldn’t find anyone in the six-yard box with his cut back.

As the second half started, Oldham had their only mini-spell in the game  - Ishmael Miller had a snapshot from the edge of the box that Luke McCormick smartly saved.

Matt Taylor tried to catch Daniel Iversen out from range but, even though it looked like it had gone in, the shot flew wide.

Miller went close for the visiting Latics again, stinging the palms of McCormick from a tight angle.

Steven Alzate looked determined to open the visitors up – a ridiculous bit of trickery turned two Oldham defenders inside out, he found Dunne who found Keshi Anderson but Peter Clarke was on hand for Oldham to slide in and stop a goal.

Oldham were solid for the last 20 minutes – limiting Town to hopeful crosses and set-pieces into the box but on 90+3 they could have broken and won the game but the experienced Matty Taylor, flicked his foot to bring down Nepomuceno, something that every player on the pitch would have done and every fan in the stands would have wanted.
