Bridgwater United 2-1 Swindon Town Women

Swindon unfortunate to come away with three points after a tough battle

11 March 2024

Swindon Town Women fell to a frustrating 2-1 away defeat to Bridgwater United in the FA Women’s National League on Sunday afternoon.

Annie Colston opened the scoring in the early stages of the second 45 before Ellie Bishop equalised five minutes later.

Much to Swindon Town’s frustration, Bridgwater’s Fi Barry put the home side in the lead and took away all three points with them to leave Town losing their back-to-back win streak.

It was end-to-end in the first 45 minutes of play, where both teams were fighting to find the first goal of the game.

Town started to create goal opportunities just past the 20-minute mark, with captain Georgia Clifford seeking the first real chance of the game but unfortunately, her effort went just over the tip of the crossbar.

The home side began to cause threats to Town’s back line which caused Goalkeeper Emily McGrogan to step out of her goal line to make good defensive blocks to keep the game level.

The game fell quiet reaching the half-time break, but Town saw Billie Haynes limp off the pitch and forced to make a first-half substitute just before the whistle blew.

It was a promising start from Swindon in the second half, as they took the lead with just two minutes in with striker Colston who fired the ball into the back of the net with no chance of the Bridgwater’s keeper to save it.

But, not long after Swindon found themselves in a position where they were holding onto the lead however it wasn’t long until Bridgwater found the equaliser with a quick tap in from Bishop.

Swindon pushed for some chances and had an opportunity from Ellie Strippel from range, but the forward’s effort did not have enough power to find the back of the net but instead found the goalkeeper’s hands.

With only 25 minutes left, Town lost a bit of possession and Bridgwater took the lead with Barry firing the ball into the back of McGrogan’s net to put the home side in front.

Towards the final stages of the game, the game became a little scrappy from both sides and Town gave it their best shot to find an equaliser but left Somerset with nothing despite a well-fought game.

After this result, Swindon are still on the road for their next game with Maidenhead United Women on Wednesday night
